Time sure flies there's no doubt about that.
I still have some shooting to do in Toronto and am in the process of finding that perfect editor, the one that sees my same vision.
I've also been busy with my short documentary "Smudge" which was one of 5 films from Canada invited to this year's Sundance Film Festival, now it's being screened at Michael Moore's Second Annual Film festival in Traverse City, Michigan. I'll be there from August 3rd to the 7th. I'm so excited about that.
Documentary filmmaking is all about having a clear vision, an open mind, compelling characters and a camera that is always ready for anything and everything.
More on that later.
I hope you are all well.

Hi Gail,
Hope the documentary is coming along smoothly for you as you trek through the creative process.
I've mostly considered doing filmmaking through the paradigm of dramatic structure (i.e., a fictional plot or story), but once in awhile I thought of doing a documentary. Since I relocated from South Dakota back to my home state of Indiana, and given my interest in Indian Country, I've considered the idea of putting together a documentary on American Indian communities here in Indiana. One twist is that the Indian communities throughout the area here are small and loosely concentrated, in stark contrast to what they used to be back in the 1800s before major European settlement (Indiana means "land of the Indians," but that's of course an irony nowadays). Given a movement to enhance Indian culture here, it could be a worthwhile project for me to engage in sometime. I'm sure I could apply for a grant from an arts council here that could fund it. It's just that, at this juncture, my heart is centered on working with some local folks in putting together an indie film that would be a drama. Having come from the acting side, I'm learning the more involved process of behind-the-scenes work (sometimes it makes me want to stick to just acting). Although I'm not in your shoes, I sorta can empathize to some extent with the choices you have to make in weighing what works in a film, such as what elements work best in a scene relative to perceived audience expectations. It's like that ol' saying: you live and learn, and perhaps with ever increasing experience, you make things better.
If finding an editor who shares your vision in regard to the documentary proves daunting, you may consider a bold alternative: If the documentary is in digital format, utilize video production software (such as Adobe Production Studio or something similar) and edit it solo. The may be a steep learning curve at first, but then it may provide more creative control during post-production in the long-run.
A follow-up to the previous comment on editor/software: A nifty thing with digital nowadays is that you could be at home on the computer looking at the raw takes, then send the compilation of raw takes to the editor across town (or across provinces/states) as a file via Internet, preferrably broadband. If the editor's software uses the same file format, he or she can edit it and send it back to you at home to your computer (or even to computer you have hooked up to the Internet at the scene location). I've heard of it being done in Hollywood: A producer in LA sends the film to an editing facility in NYC, where maybe it's scored with a soundtrack or edited further with scenes involving NYC. I'm no major expert on it, but what I've read or seen.
(Sorry if it appears that I've typed a plethora of comments here to your original July 17th post: It's just that there were quite a few tidbits I felt inclined to share. I promise to adhere to brevity here. At any rate...)
I noticed that in one of the behind-the-scenes pics you posted of production in Cambridge Bay, John the DP was shooting with what appears to be a 35mm film camera. I know film has its technical advantages, and not to discount film completely, but something you may consider is sometime taking the 35mm film to a local film processor in Toronto and having them convert it to digital. Being in digital, you could go back and re-edit takes to combine with other projects or for a future enhanced release; in addition, the documentary would not degrade over time and thus be preserved for future generations.
Not that you have to be your own editor, as I'm sure that can take on a life of it's own and thus you may prefer to out-source the editing, but as a director you may still want to tweek things around the edges, perhaps digitally as alluded to in my recent comments. Two brands of digital software that I've noticed as of late are Adobe Premiere Elements 2.0, and Apple's Final Cut Pro.
Anyway, speaking as fellow contemporary in acting/film, keep excelling for your best :)
